Students research the history of The Hills Shire Darug tribe, the importance of Indigenous sites in the area and Indigenous names associated with the North West Region of Sydney. Students gain an understanding of local Indigenous groups connection to North West Region communities through individual Indigenous inspired artwork.

In this lesson students explore the importance of country and place to Aboriginal people, with a focus on the Darug people of the North West Sydney region. Students examine a range of evidence about the Darug to help answer the questions ' Who lived here first?' and 'How do we know?'

In this lesson students explore what life was like for Aboriginal people before the arrival of Europeans. With focus on the Sydney region. Students investigate what the natural environment was like and how Aboriginal people made use of the resources around them, managing them sustainability.

This inquiry-based unit of work was created, trialled and peer reviewed as part of a professional learning program in inquiry-based learning for school teachers. The professional learning courses were part of a pilot partnership between the NSW Government’s Sydney Metro transport agency and Western Sydney University.

This Stage 1 complete unit of work meets syllabus outcomes from the built environments (ST1-14BE) strand of the NSW Science K-10 syllabus. It is designed to be taught over one term but individual lessons can also be selected as required.

In this lesson students explore places in their local environment through imagines of memorials, museum exhibits, older houses and other structures that remind us of the past. The focus of the lesson is the Bidjigal Reserve as a significant place in the local community, what it reveals about the past, and how people interact with and care for the place today.
