Sydney Metro West – planning approvals

Sydney Metro West is subject to environmental assessment under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act). The project is classified as Critical State Significant Infrastructure under Part 5 division 5.2 (formally Part 5.1) of the EP&A Act.

Westmead to The Bays and Sydney CBD

The Department of Planning and Environment has assessed the first Sydney Metro West Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) ▪ external site and has granted approval for the Sydney Metro West project concept between Westmead to the Sydney CBD and station excavation and tunnelling between Westmead and The Bays.

This EIS was on public exhibition and submissions received from stakeholders and the community were considered in the assessment of the project.

Major civil construction work, including station excavation and tunnelling, between Westmead and The Bays will be phased in accordance with condition A10 of the project conditions of approval. Read the project Phasing Report.

The Bays to Sydney CBD

The Department of Planning and Environment assessed the second Sydney Metro West Environmental Impact Statement ▪ external site and has granted approval for major civil construction work, including station excavation and tunnelling, between The Bays and Sydney CBD.

This EIS was on public exhibition from November to December 2021, and submissions received from stakeholders and the community were considered in the assessment of the project.

Rail infrastructure, stations, precincts and operations between Westmead and Sydney CBD

The Department of Planning and Environment has assessed the third Sydney Metro West Environmental Impact Statement ▪ external site and has granted approval for rail infrastructure, stations, precincts and operations between Westmead and Sydney CBD.

The Environmental Impact Statement ▪ external site was on public exhibition from 23 March to 4 May 2022, and submissions received from stakeholders and the community were considered in the assessment of the project.

Over and/or adjacent station development

Sydney Metro has also commenced planning for over and adjacent station development at Parramatta ▪ external siteSydney Olympic Park ▪ external site, Hunter Street (West ▪ external siteand East ▪ external site) and Pyrmont ▪ external site.

The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure granted approval for over and/or adjacent station development at Sydney Olympic Park ▪ external siteHunter Street Station East ▪ external site and Hunter Street Station West ▪ external site in 2024. 

The Environmental Impact Statement for over station development at Parramatta ▪ external site and Pyrmont ▪ external site are currently under assessment. 

Eastern Creek Precast Facilities – planning approval

Sydney Metro undertook a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) process to consider the potential environmental impacts of the proposal and identify the measures to mitigate them.

Following this detailed environmental assessment process, which included feedback from the community, Sydney Metro has concluded that the project can proceed safely.

Sydney International Speedway – planning approval

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Sydney International Speedway sought approval for construction and operation of a new speedway within the existing motorsport precinct at Eastern Creek.

The Minister for Planning and Public Spaces approved the Environmental Impact Statement for the Sydney International Speedway ▪ external site on 23 December 2020.

This project is now completed and has been handed over to the operator – Eastern Creek Speedway.  ▪ external site
