Railway steel has been delivered for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project and work is now underway to prepare for track laying.
More than 4,000 tonnes of rail steel will be used to lay 30 kilometres of track in the new metro tunnels between Marrickville and Chatswood, including through the CBD and under Sydney Harbour.
Before the track is laid, a flash butt welding machine is used to weld together short lengths of rail steel into longer 120-metre sections.
The rail will be moved into the tunnels ahead of tracklaying.
